“It seems like every young kid in Philadelphia wanted to be a singer… I started as a musician…a trumpet player in the beginning. But, when I read about Jimmy Darren who was from my own neighborhood and school, making a successful career for himself, I decided that I could do it just as well.”

FRANKIE AVALON'S
BIOGRAGPHY
Frankie Avalon is an American singer, actor, and former teen idol, best known for his work in the 1950s and 1960s. He was born on September 18, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He became famous for his smooth, clean-cut image and his success as a pop singer, particularly with songs like “Venus” and “Why”. His music epitomized the bubblegum pop sound of the era, and he became a fixture on the charts.
Avalon began his career at a young age. He was a talented trumpet player and began performing in local venues as a teenager.
Even before the age of 10, Frankie seized every opportunity to enter local amateur contests, winning one after another. On his own initiative, Frankie began taking lessons, and continued his musical studies long and hard through the years that followed. One of his instructors, a member of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, volunteered to teach the young trumpet virtuoso after hearing him play. Considered a child prodigy – Frankie made guest appearances as a trumpet player on The Perry Como and Jackie Gleeson Television Shows.
His big break came when he was discovered by record producer Joe South, leading to a recording contract with Chancellor Records. His 1959 hit "Venus" became one of his signature songs, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In addition to his music career, Avalon also became known for his work as an actor. In the early 1960s, he starred in a string of successful beach party movies, often alongside actress Annette Funicello. These films, including Beach Party (1963), Muscle Beach Party (1964), and Bikini Beach (1964), were a key part of the teen movie craze that defined the decade. His wholesome, good-boy image made him a popular star with young audiences.
As the popularity of teen idols began to fade in the mid-1960s, Avalon transitioned into other acting roles, including guest spots on TV shows and some dramatic roles. Though his musical and film career waned by the end of the 1960s, he continued to make occasional appearances in entertainment, and his legacy as a teen idol and pop star remained intact.
As a multi – platinum recording artist, Frankie has a long string of gold record , million – seller singles and albums. In 1959 alone Frankie had 6 solid hits that were in the top 40 and his music became one of the defining sounds of the “Pre – Beatles” Rock and Roll. Never one to settle for one career, Frankie has 30 motion picture credits including starring roles in the highly successful and beloved “Beach Party” film series.
Although Frankie loves making movies, his soul is fed by live audiences in the finest nightclubs and supper clubs around the world. Frankie has played to sold out houses in the best rooms in every major city in America including The Fontainebleau and Eden Roc Hotels in Miami Beach, Rainbow Grill and Copacabana in New York.
Currently, Frankie is still one of the busiest nightclub performers in the country, headlining at top nightclubs and Las Vegas Hotel Main rooms and is a familiar face to television viewers, having appeared top variety shows, guest – starring on numerous dramatic series, and starring in several of his own specials.
Frankie Avalon’s combination of good looks, musical talent, and acting ability made him one of the enduring figures of 1950s and 1960s pop culture, and he remains a beloved figure from the golden age of rock ‘n’ roll.
